How to Potty Train Your Puppy

How to Potty Train Your Puppy

You’ve just gotten a new puppy, congratulations! If your dog is going to spend time inside the house as well as outside, you need to teach him to be potty trained. Puppies have very small bladders, and they need to urinate frequently. Make sure to take your puppy outside frequently for bathroom breaks. Keep your puppy confined to one or two rooms so that you have the opportunity to catch him in the act of peeing if he is unable to make it outside. Every time you take your puppy outside, and he pees or poops, praise him excessively.

Should you punish your puppy for accidents?

If your puppy has an accident in the house, do not punish him and rub his nose in it. This is been proven repeatedly to not be helpful. The best thing you can do is to try to catch the puppy before they pee or as he is peeing. Quickly take the puppy outside, and if he continues to go to the bathroom, praise him heavily. If you find a puddle and the puppy is nowhere near it, simply clean it up and move on with your day.

Praise the things you want, ignore the things you don’t want

You want to praise every single good behavior, and just ignore the bad ones. Been rubbing your puppy’s face in his pee or poop inside the house, you will do nothing to help him learn about where he should go to the bathroom.

Be vigilant and try to catch all accidents before they happen

The best thing you can do is very consistent and vigilant. Try to catch your puppy before you has the chance to pee. Take him outside regularly and consistently praise him for each successful use of the bathroom outside. You can even train him to use a specific spot for going pee and poop. This will limit the amount of bathroom deposits you find around your yard.
